The Insurance Managers Association of Cayman (IMAC) has reported sustained growth in Cayman’s international insurance sector, following the release of the Cayman Islands Monetary Authority’s (CIMA) Q2 2026 licensing statistics.
Between April and June 2026, CIMA issued six new international insurer licenses, all class B(i) licenses, along with three Portfolio Insurance Companies (PICs). This brings the total number of new international insurance licenses issued in 2026 to 20.
CIMA has also confirmed that a further 17 licenses applications are currently under review, providing positive momentum for the remainder of the year. By comparison, 41 new international insurance licenses were issued during 2025.
With these additions, Cayman is now home to 721 Class B, C and D insurance companies, collectively writing approximately US$61 billion in premiums and holding total assets of approximately US$190 billion. The increase in premium from Q1 indicates a further $10 billion in premium and $14 billion in total asset value, IMAC said.
The continued expansion of Class B(i) insurers reflects Cayman’s ongoing strength as a preferred domicile for single-parent captive formations, and reinforces the jurisdiction’s position as a leading international insurance centre.
Commenting on the Q2 figures, IMAC Chair, James Trundle, said, “These figures demonstrate the ongoing strength and diversity of Cayman’s international insurance industry and showcases the jurisdiction’s appeal for a wide range of captive and reinsurance structures. It is indeed encouraging to see the continued growth in new insurance license activity during the first half of 2026.”
Trundle also encouraged industry participants to attend the 2026 Cayman Captive Forum, taking place on December 1–3, 2026 at The Ritz-Carlton, Grand Cayman, stating:
“The Cayman Captive Forum continues to be the premier opportunity to experience first-hand the depth of expertise and innovation within Cayman’s captive insurance market. We look forward to welcoming delegates from around the world to what is expected to be another sold-out event.”
