Nearly 400 Caymanian students have completed Cayman Finance’s LEAD Programme since its launch in 2015, many alumni now working in the financial services industry and even more studying for degrees in relevant fields. The milestone marks a decade of creating pathways for young Caymanians into one of the country’s most important economic sectors.
LEAD (Learn, Educate, Apply, Develop) has provided Caymanian high school students with workshops, mentorship, and a four-week paid work placement in financial services firms. The programme ran successfully from 2015 to 2019 before pausing during the COVID-19 pandemic and relaunching in 2023.
Of the approximately 250 students who participated before the pandemic, at least 85 have gone on to build careers in the finance industry, working in roles across legal services, accounting, compliance, fund services, insurance and other sectors. The success rate demonstrates the programme’s effectiveness in converting student interest into long-term careers.

The programme’s longevity and impact reflects how the financial services sector to develops local talent and ensures Caymanians have access to meaningful career opportunities in an industry that drives significant economic value for the Islands.
Strong employment record in financial services
The programme’s success aligns with the financial services sector’s strong record of local employment. According to a recent report by Capital Economics commissioned by Cayman Finance, approximately 54% of the 6,700 financial services jobs are held by Caymanians, compared to just 29% in construction and 17% in tourism. This represents the highest rate of Caymanian employment among the Islands’ major economic sectors.
The sector is also Cayman’s largest employer of women, with nearly 60% of its workforce female. Around one in five Caymanian women is employed in the sector. These employment figures show the importance of programmes like LEAD in developing the next generation of Caymanian professionals and ensuring the industry continues to provide accessible career pathways for local talent.
The financial services industry’s commitment to local employment extends beyond hiring to include comprehensive training, professional development and career advancement opportunities. LEAD serves as the entry point for many young Caymanians to access these opportunities and begin building their careers in the sector.
Comprehensive preparation for career success
The LEAD Programme consists of three main components designed to prepare students comprehensively for careers in financial services. The first component involves eight one-hour workshops held weekly from May through June. These sessions are facilitated by Cayman Finance staff and professionals from member firms, and cover topics including investment funds, banking, trusts, capital markets, soft skills and careers in supporting roles. The workshops provide students with a foundational understanding of the industry’s various sectors and the interconnected nature of financial services.
The second component pairs each student with a financial services professional for one-on-one mentorship. Students meet with their mentors for eight weekly sessions during the workshop period, plus two additional meetings during the summer work placement. These mentorship relationships provide invaluable guidance, allowing students to ask questions, learn about day-to-day responsibilities in different roles, and receive personalised advice on career development. Mentors also assist students with CV development and interview preparation, ensuring they are well-equipped for the formal interview process.
The third component is a four-week paid work placement in July or August with Cayman Finance member organisations. This hands-on experience allows students to apply what they have learned in workshops and from their mentors while gaining direct exposure to working in a professional office environment. For many participants, this is their first experience of a corporate setting, learning about workplace culture, professional communication, and business etiquette.
This summer, the programme placed 36 students across approximately 30 Cayman Finance member organisations.
Industry partnership and support
Cayman Finance’s member firms have been essential to the programme’s success over the past decade. The commitment from member firms includes providing facilitators for workshops, volunteering professionals to serve as mentors and hosting students for work placements. This collaborative approach ensures students receive authentic insights into the industry and build professional networks that can support their career development long after the programme concludes.
Some former participants maintain relationships with their mentors years after completing LEAD. These ongoing connections demonstrate the lasting impact of the relationships formed through the programme.
Looking ahead
The programme is open to Caymanian students in Year 12 of the government dual-enrolment programme, Year 12 in British system private schools, or Grade 11 in American system private schools. Students must meet academic requirements, including maintaining at least a 2.5 GPA or predicted grades of three C or above passes, and must provide proof of Caymanian status and health insurance coverage. Good attendance and behaviour records are also required.
Applications for the 2026 LEAD Programme will open in February 2026. Students who successfully complete all components of the programme, attending all workshops and mentor sessions and completing the four-week work placement, receive valuable hands-on experience and professional development that positions them for future careers in the industry. Successful applicants will receive a $1,500 USD stipend after the four-week placement.
To complement LEAD, Cayman Finance has also introduced the Fundamentals of Financial Services workshop series for Year 9 students, reaching younger students before they make subject choices that will shape their educational and career paths. This earlier intervention aims to broaden awareness of career opportunities in financial services and encourage students to pursue relevant academic preparation.
As the programme enters its second decade, Cayman Finance remains committed to expanding access and ensuring every Caymanian student interested in financial services has the opportunity to explore these career paths. The alumni now working in the sector represent not just individual success stories, but a growing community of Caymanian professionals who are shaping the future of the industry.
