The Cayman Islands Legal Practitioners Association (CILPA) is the industry body and supervisory authority for Cayman Islands attorneys-at-law. CILPA’s Constitution sets out its membership, election processes and meeting procedures. CILPA is governed and managed by an elected Council comprising the President, one Treasurer, one Secretary and four other Council members.
CILPA membership is open to everyone who has been admitted as an attorney-at-law, is in good standing and has a current practicing certificate. Newly qualified Cayman Islands attorneys are encouraged to join CILPA upon admission to the Bar. Members must also comply with the Code of Conduct and the Articles of Association.
The Cayman Islands Legal Practitioners Association (CILPA) is a company limited by guarantee established in October 2018. CILPA aims to provide modern and transparent governance of the profession.

The Council meets as needed during each year. The Council acts as the executive body, managing the affairs of CILPA.
Functions
The regulatory functions of CILPA include performing the role of Supervisory Authority under the under the Anti-Money Laundering (Designated Non-Financial Business and Professions) (No.1) Regulations 2017, and assisting and promoting the reform of the law (for the purpose of upholding the rule of law and the administration of justice).
Among CILPA’s regulatory activities are:
- maintaining a register of attorneys; and
- law reform activities, including submissions on legislation
All attorneys are regulated, and must pay the required regulatory fees and levies.
The representative functions of CILPA are to represent its members and to serve their interests. Services include continuing legal education.
Membership
Full membership of CILPA is voluntary, and is open to any attorney holding a current practising certificate. The benefits of membership include access to the full range of CILPA’s representative services and the opportunity to have a say in the way the profession is supported and regulated.
Rules for the election of honorary members and for student members exist under relevant provisions in CILPA’s Constitution.
