Appleby Cayman is sponsoring a sea turtle in a new Department of Environment research programme designed to track turtle movements in Cayman waters and across the Caribbean.
The Sea Turtle Tracker KY initiative, launched by the Department of Environment in 2026, uses acoustic and satellite telemetry to collect information on migration patterns, habitat use and sea turtle behaviour. The data is intended to support conservation work and inform future environmental management.
Appleby staff voted to name the firm’s sponsored turtle “Aristurtle.” The company said it has committed to sponsoring a second turtle as part of its continued support for the department’s sea turtle conservation and research efforts.
Acoustic tracking under the programme is supported by the Darwin Initiative, while local businesses and community partners fund satellite transmitter deployments through sponsorships, according to the release.
Simon Raftopoulos, Appleby’s managing partner, said the sponsorship reflects the firm’s support for marine conservation.
“In the Cayman Islands, our oceans are central to our identity, and we all have a role to play in preserving them for future generations,” Raftopoulos said. “Naming Aristurtle was a highlight for our team, and we’re looking forward to inviting others to get involved in choosing a name for the next turtle.”
Appleby said it plans to follow Aristurtle’s movements through the tracking programme and involve others in selecting a name for the next turtle it sponsors.
