Cayman Finance hosts government and industry roundtable in Singapore

Cayman Finance member firms in Asia met with Deputy Premier André Ebanks; Cindy Scotland, managing director of the Cayman Islands Monetary Authority and other representatives from Cayman's government and financial regulator in Singapore on 27 June.

Cayman Finance has facilitated a meeting between its member firms in Asia, Deputy Premier and Minister for Financial Services André Ebanks, Managing Director of the Cayman Islands Monetary Authority, Cindy Scotland, and other representatives of Cayman’s government and financial regulator.

The roundtable, held on Thursday, 27 June, at the Fairmont Singapore hotel, discussed key trends and issues for funds and other financial services in Asia. It also gave the Financial Services Ministry and CIMA the opportunity to present regulatory updates and receive important feedback from the industry.

The meeting followed the official opening of the Cayman Islands government’s Asia office in Singapore on 26 June.

Cayman Finance CEO Steve McIntosh said: “It was wonderful to spend time with leaders from the Cayman Finance member community here in Singapore and across Asia. We were especially pleased to be joined by the Deputy Premier and Minister for Financial Services and the Managing Director of the Monetary Authority who both spoke eloquently and candidly on current and upcoming priorities for the jurisdiction.”

McIntosh said, “It was clear from the discussion that members are thrilled about the establishment of the Asia office and the arrival of Mr. Gene DaCosta, whose distinguished career in financial services makes him well-positioned as Overseas Representative.

“There is simply no substitute for this kind of face-to-face engagement,” he added.

Deputy Premier Ebanks said, “It was a superb week for the Cayman Islands, and the Cayman Finance roundtable was one of the highlights on our schedule.”

He said, “Every time there’s engagement between Cayman and Asia, both sides of the table gain insights into how we can work more closely together, in ways that enhance our respective reputations for sound business.”

Earlier this year, Cayman Finance held similar engagement discussions, which help deepen the connection with Cayman’s key markets, with industry partners in New York.

In March, Cayman Finance connected small groups of industry stakeholders with representatives from the Cayman Islands government, the Cayman Islands Monetary Authority (CIMA) and the financial services industry for a constructive dialogue about the jurisdiction.

The Cayman Islands delegation in Singapore featured in addition to the deputy premier, CIMA’s managing director and the Cayman Finance CEO; Dr. Dax Basdeo, chief officer of the Ministry of Financial Services and Commerce; government’s overseas representative to Asia, Gene DaCosta; Julie Campbell, government’s deputy representative for financial services to Europe; Judiann Myles, the head of CIMA’s Anti-Money Laundering Division and the deputy head of the division, Megan Powell.
