Spectrum 2023 conference imagines future for financial services

Spectrum 2023 – the Cayman Islands financial services conference that examines global issues and new opportunities – is bringing leading industry experts together for a full day’s debate on the future shape of the financial services sector on 14 Sept.

The conference will look at how international financial centres like the Cayman Islands can approach the future and thrive in a competitive landscape.

Now into its third year, Spectrum features a range of international and local experts, with an agenda that captures the pulse of an industry facing significant challenges and increased regulatory pressure.

“We are delighted to bring back the Spectrum conference which will be bigger than ever for 2023,” said Paul Byles, director of FTS and founder of the event. “The Cayman Islands financial sector has been successful despite a challenging period and there are tremendous opportunities for IFCs to meet the changing needs of highly sophisticated clients. At Spectrum 2023, financial industry leaders can consider these issues from a broader perspective and examine how greater diversification and innovation can make the Cayman Islands more resilient to both regulatory and economic developments,” he added.

The Ministry of Financial Services is once again the partner sponsor of the event and Minister of Financial Services and Commerce Andre Ebanks will be delivering introductory remarks.

The minister said: “The Cayman Islands financial services industry continues to evolve successfully in the face of challenges and we have achieved this success due to an effective partnership between the government and the private sector. This year’s Spectrum and its forward-looking agenda presents us with a forum to examine the opportunities that the industry provides to the wider Cayman Islands community.”

This year’s Spectrum brings new topics to the agenda, with more discussion-based panels, including reinsurance and family offices. The reinsurance sector has progressed into an important part of the financial industry, capitalising on Cayman’s expertise in insurance and capital markets risk transfer. Spectrum 2023 will look at further developing opportunities in reinsurance, against a backdrop of climate change, catastrophic events, more regulation and a deteriorating economic outlook.

Another expert panel will focus on the biggest strand of the financial sector in Cayman. While the past decade in funds has seen greater trends towards more fund customisation, with demands for bespoke structures and ‘funds of one’, current industry activity points to the use of even more complex and diverse structures.

The rise to prominence of Environmental, Social and Governance factors in the investment world has been unprecedented, with ESG the topic now uppermost in mind across the financial industry. At what seems a critical inflexion point for global finance, in the context of the climate emergency and social change around the world, Spectrum 2023 will examine exactly how ESG practices should be integrated at the IFC level amid a building backlash in the US.

Navigating the Evolving Landscape for Family Offices, brings another new topic to the Spectrum agenda, which has attracted significant attention and now represents a key source of business for local service providers.

Other sessions will assess Cayman’s opportunity in Empowering Virtual Assets and Fintech, while CIMA’s senior management team will participate in an informative Regulatory Panel that is not to be missed.

Sponsored by the Ministry of Financial Service and Commerce, Cayman Finance, BDO Cayman and produced and hosted by FTS, Spectrum is a ‘must attend’ event for senior managers, partners and financial services business leaders from the public and private sector. As the only financial services event in Cayman focused on future industry growth, the conference offers excellent networking and sponsorship opportunities, while promoting the benefits of IFCs and the Cayman Islands financial services sector.

Spectrum 2023 is a full-day event, taking place on 14 September 2023 at the Ritz-Carlton Grand Cayman and further information can be found on the website at www.spectrum.ky.
